Southerly Homes Brings Real Conversations to Austin Builders

Some of the best decisions we make about how we build homes happen not on jobsites, but in rooms full of other builders, comparing notes on what’s actually working.

That’s the idea behind the Curious Builder Collective, a new networking effort for construction professionals, and it’s why our own Nick Quijano helped lead its first Austin gathering alongside Frank Farkash of Moontower Austin. The Curious Builder covered the event in detail, and we wanted to share why it mattered to us, too.

Skipping the Slideshow

Most industry events follow the same script, but the Curious Builder Collective set out to do something different, ditching the stage and the pitch deck for five round tables, a working lunch, and a showroom of the materials builders actually use every day.

Nick and Frank brought together a genuinely mixed room for that first Austin session: solo builders just starting to gain traction, alongside established companies with decades behind them. Different sizes, different stages, and, as it turned out, a lot of the same challenges once the conversation got past introductions.

What Builders Are Actually Talking About

The morning centered on sales and marketing, and a few themes surfaced again and again:

  • Referrals only go so far. Most builders still lean heavily on word-of-mouth, and while that works for a while, there’s real uncertainty about when and how to invest in ads, PR, or other channels without a clear return.
  • There’s no single system that fixes everything. Whether it’s CRMs, project management tools, or workflows, everyone’s trying something different, and the group’s consensus was that the right system is the one that actually fits how a particular business runs, not whatever’s trending.
  • Alignment matters more than hustle. This was the sharpest takeaway of the day: builders rarely fail from lack of effort. They stumble when the client, the partnership, or the process just isn’t a fit. Get the alignment right, and the effort pays off. Get it wrong, and no amount of pushing changes that.

Why This Fits Who We Are

That last point, that alignment beats effort every time, is something we think about constantly at Southerly Homes. It’s the reason we spend real time up front with every homeowner, understanding the land, the vision, and how they actually want to experience the building process, before a single plan gets drawn. A beautiful home built on the wrong foundation of trust and communication rarely feels like a win to the family living in it.

Getting in a room with other builders and comparing notes honestly, including the parts that aren’t working, is part of how we stay sharp on that. It’s also, frankly, just good Texan hospitality: pull up a chair, be honest, and help the person next to you.

This was the first Austin gathering for the Curious Builder Collective, and by every account it won’t be the last. We’re glad Nick had a hand in getting it started, and we’re looking forward to where these conversations go next.
